The
Acropolis
The
Acropolis is the most famous site in Greece. And the most famous
building at the Acropolis is the Parthenon. Built in the
year...well, I don't remember the exact year. But
its like 2,400 years old.
The site is actually a
religious complex, with several temples all
built around the 5th century BC. The city of Athens is named after the
goddess Athena, and the Parthenon is dedicated to her, as well.
It's really become the
symbol of Greece, and it was the first thing I
saw when I arrived in
Athens. Here's a little tip for when you go: show up in the late
afternoon. There are practically no tourists, and the sun hits the
Parthenon just right for photos.
Another cool temple on the
Acropolis is the Erechtheum. I don't know
how to pronounce it, but if I'm not careful it sounds dirty. Especially
when you see the women sculpted on the south porch of the building:
These beautiful Greek women
were, of course, the only Greek women I
spent time with. Real Greek
women are beautiful. And smart. Thus, they were wise enough to know not
to hang out with me. Probably something
to do with lame jokes I tried to make about the Erechtheum.
I spent about 5 hours just roaming around the site. (When you travel by
yourself, a guy has a lot of free time.)
But I just considered the thousands of years of history that have
passed since these buildings were built 2,400 years ago. 400 years
before Jesus was born. 400 years! Really puts our lives into
perspective, doesn't it?
It's easy to think we're the center of our own universe. But, of
course, we're not. God should be the center of our universe. Because
He's the only one who's the same yesterday, today, and forever.
And if these buildings could talk, they sure would have a lot to say.
But buildings can't talk, so lets move on...
