It was the commercial center
of ancient Athens. People shopped, talked
politics, and generally hung out in togas.
You can almost picture the ancient people walking down these streets.
Socrates... Plato... and...Zorba the Greek? I ran out of famous Greek
names.
One person who walked these very streets, though, was Saint Paul. And
although Paul was an amazing evangelist - he actually had very little
success in Athens.
It's kind of odd to think of Saint Paul as unable to convert people,
isn't it? But maybe it's nice to know even saints weren't always
successful. They weren't always perfect.
And even though Paul may not have had much success preaching the Gospel
during this visit...the faith did eventually spread throughout Greece.
You don't need to look any further than the Temple of Hephaistos.
This amazingly
well-preserved temple was built in the 5th century BC,
and later became a church. Cool looking church, isn't it?
Admittedly, a little breezy
on a windy day, but nonetheless...
