Meteora means 'in the air'.
Because these monasteries seem to be floating in the air.
To this day, no one knows
exactly how the monasteries were built. What we do know is that once
they
were
built, if you didn't have the strength to walk up on your own - they
had a basket and pulley to bring you up. There was just one small
problem: They only replaced the ropes after God "allowed" them to
break. Talk about having faith in God! I don't have that much faith.
I'd be buying lots of rope if I lived there...
