Philippi

The city of Philippi holds a very unique place in the history of Christianity:

Philippi was the first city in Europe to accept Christianity.

And if you think about it, that's quite impressive! It wasn't Rome that first accepted the faith. But it was the little city of Philippi, when Paul preached there and baptized a woman named Lydia.

Unfortunately, there isn't much left of the ancient city anymore.

And Philippi's a big name in the Bible, as well.

Ever heard of Paul's Letters to the Philippians? Well, if you hadn't before, you have now. Philippians, Corinthians, Thessalonians...these are all books in the Bible.

And Paul didn't just write to these folks. He also spent time here in Philippi. He was even imprisoned in this city - along with his friend Silas.

Prison of Saint Paul

I can't imagine being imprisoned just for my faith. Maybe that's because my faith is so small that they'd consider it a misdemeanor.

Anyway, one of the best preserved places in the old city? The public bathrooms, strangely enough.

Yes, I realize it's odd to even mention this - but I saw the men's latrines, and I couldn't help but think Saint Paul may have made a pit stop at one point...

I bring this up only because the saints often seem like people very different than us. And in one sense they are - because they're holier than we are! So we're supposed to strive to be like them. But we also get to remember that they're real flesh and blood human beings just like us.

Thus, maybe the latrines are an inspiration?

Maybe not.
