Universal
Q:
Why are
Catholics called Catholics?
-M.L.
A:
Well let me say, I've been called much worse. And I realize Catholics
aren't always portrayed well in the media. But enough about us...
The word "catholic" actually means "universal". So for centuries, being
a Christian was basically called a Catholic - because all Christians
held to the one universal faith. Seems like a long time ago, doesn't
it, that Christians all believed the same thing?
But since there are, indeed, differences in Christianity - we are
called by different names. And since those differences do exist, we
often call each other names.
So being called Catholic might be better than being called what people
really think of us! Because when you call someone a Catholic you're
really saying they hold to the universal faith held for 2,000 years.
