St. Wenceslaus
Around Christmastime,
everyone hears that song: "Good King Wenceslaus looked out on the feast
of Stephen. When the snow lay round about, deep and crisp and even..."
I don't know the rest of the
words. But the point is, you've heard of the Good King.
Well it turns out there were several kings named Wenceslaus. And when
you visit St. Vito's Cathedral, you can see the tomb where one of them
- the only canonized Wenceslaus - is buried.
Yep, the person you heard
about in catchy Christmas tunes was a real
human being. And a canonized saint, no less! It's kinda nice to put a
face to a song, isn't it?
Poor Wenceslaus was murdered by his own brother (and you thought your
family was dysfynctional!) nearly 1,000 years ago. But his legacy lives
on.
His tomb is really the highlight of the Cathedral of St. Vito.
And by
the way, I'd never heard of St. Vito before. I'd have thought a church
named after a guy named Vito would be in Sicily - not Prague - but what
can you do...
Anyway, St. Vito's Cathedral is built inside of this huge complex which
is Prague Castle. And as we walked around this castle/cathedral/tourist
mecca, there were lots of cool and beautiful things I could have taken
pictures of.
But I settled upon this one - thanks to a rather
disturbing
sign:

Happy Package??
I'm not sure what they were
selling...but I'm not buying.
