For most tourists, the main
attraction in Segovia is this fantastic Roman aqueduct right in the
middle of the city...
This aqueduct was used from
the 1st century all the way up until the 19th century.
That's because Romans built
it and Romans are the best. I say that because Romans are Italians and
Italians are the best. I say that because I'm Italian and need to feel
good about myself.
Especially when taking stupid pictures like this:
That's the beautiful Gothic Cathedral of Segovia, which is the second
most popular attraction in the city.
And perhaps the least popular attraction? The place where my well-worn
finger is pointed to now...
It may not look too far away, but we are making a long walk out to the
countryside to see the tomb of St John of the Cross.
We got here after about an hour of walking, and it was worth it.
St John of the Cross is a Doctor of the Church, and was a
contemporary of St Theresa of Avila. He was an extraordinary writer who
wrote
something called "Dark Night of the Soul". This ain't Oprah's Book Club
around here, but I recommend it nonetheless.
More proof he isn't a part of Oprah's Book Club? No one was in the
church.
Of course, that was fortunate for us. We got to pray at the tomb of a
Doctor of the Church with no one else in sight.
Not bad for a couple guys who take inappropriate pictures in foreign
cities.
