We happened to be traveling
to Toledo on February 14th: St. Valentine's Day. And I was curious how
the Spaniards would celebrate this great saint.
Imagine my surprise when the first store we see in the city of Toledo
was, in fact, selling Valentine's Day gifts:
I'm far from a romantic guy, but toilet paper for Valentine's Day? Wow.
Thankfully their taste in churches is better than their taste in gifts.
And we had heard the Toledo Cathedral is one of the largest in all of
Christendom. If only Matt could find it on a map...
Finally, I just asked the obvious question: "How 'bout that big
pointy-looking church thing over there? Any chance that's what we're
looking for?"
Whaddaya know? That's the Cathedral!
It was started in 1226 and took more than 250 years to build. Must have
been a union gig. But it was worth it. And unfortunately, I don't know
what I can say about the place other than it was beautiful. So take a
look...
There's something I love about praying in a place where people have
been praying for centuries and centuries. Same faith, same church. My
favorite part of traveling is the reminder that
it's the same Catholic faith which has been passed down not just for
700
years... but for 2,000 years.
So whether you're in Toledo, Ohio or Toledo, Spain? It's all the same.
Though from what I hear Spain may be a little more beautiful. No
offense Toledo, Ohioians.
